Chapter 42

I was surprised to find a lot of chatter in the corridor.

A group of slate-gray robots stood around the open elevator door, one scratching its head. They were humanoid, their bodies perfectly proportional.

"It should not be working," one said, enunciating each word. "I swear, I checked on it not even an hour ago, and it would not respond."

"It's not working," another one said, his voice a little deeper. He walked over to a control panel, rapping it with his knuckles. "None of the lights are on."

As I rolled my eyes, my interface locked onto them. It wasn't worth talking to them. For all I knew, they could be working for—

"Xaos," one of them said.

Still staring at the open elevator, all of the robots stiffened.

"Why would you say that name?" the one pressing a hand into the control panel hissed.

"He's here," another whispered. “Deep, within the fortress.”

And to my surprise, he was shaking.

Model One stood beside me, tall and large, stiff with tension… And he was eyeing my blaster.

"The robot masters will stop him," one said, stepping toward the elevator, hands behind his back. “Plus, Master Riley has precautions. No intruder can break through these walls and survive.” The robot spun on his heel, facing the group. Then his glowing eyes looked up, locking onto mine. "Gah!" he said, arms spinning as he flinched back. Everyone else turned, then as one, they all flinched "Gah!"

One slammed both hands against his mouth. Eyes going wide, he took a slow step back. "That's... He's the one..."

"You killed Bogman," the robot near the control panel growled, gritting metal teeth.

I was tempted to just shove them aside and move toward the elevator. But their conversation, their emotions…it was artificial, I knew, but it sounded so real. Model One was already stomping toward them, waving his large hands up and down.

"Now, now," he said, his high-pitched voice not matching his beastly body. "There will be no violence here. If you don't attack, my friend over there will hold his fire." Model One said, giving me a long, meaningful look. "Isn't that right, Blastman?"

I cleared my throat and lowered my blaster. With a sharp nod, I agreed.

"See," Model One said, "he doesn't just kill for no reason..."

As Model One talked, it got me thinking. When did I start seeing robots as mere obstacles again? When Bogman tried to kill you.

Mr. Turnip stepped up beside me and unraveled his roots, cocking his head to one side as he watched Model One's exchange.

"No!" the robot behind the control panel cut in. "Riley has given us the responsibility to man these elevators. And there are to be no unwarranted visitors. Especially that one." He pointed directly at me.

All I could give him was a flat stare. Human-like or not, I had no time for this. Honestly, I never have time for ridiculous arguments. Not wanting to join the heated conversation, I marched past Model One, Mr. Turnip at my heels.

Robots shied away, one of them pressing his back against the wall.
